The economist who joined the army

How does a man with an economics degree and a civilian life in the capital end up as an officer defending Kyiv? Andrii Norov was born in 1977 in Kirovohrad, today’s Kropyvnytskyi. He finished school there, studied economics and did his compulsory military service. In 2002 he moved to Kyiv, where he worked and raised his children. He took part in both the Orange Revolution and the Revolution of Dignity.

Becoming an officer

In 2016, in his late thirties, Andrii volunteered for a contract with the Armed Forces and chose the 72nd Separate Mechanized Brigade himself. He fought in the east and completed a short officers’ course. His service earned him the Medal for Military Service to Ukraine and the Order for Courage, 3rd class. By early 2022, under the call sign “Kosmos”, he was a deputy battalion commander.

Defending the Kyiv region

When the full-scale invasion began, Norov planned and organized the defense of the Kyiv hydroelectric plant in Vyshhorod, just outside Kyiv. On the very first day his unit destroyed several enemy helicopters, and later an armored vehicle, supply trucks and an ammunition depot. His soldiers fought their way into a small town in the Kyiv region and freed it. On 5 March 2022 Andrii was promoted to captain. On the night of 12 March he led a reinforced platoon sent to stop a russian breakthrough. The platoon halted the advance, and the enemy answered with Grad rocket fire.

Captain Andrii Norov was killed in the Kyiv region on 13 March 2022, when russian forces shelled a convoy carrying wounded soldiers. He was 44. On 19 March he was posthumously made a Hero of Ukraine.

Why it matters today

Andrii Norov was not a career soldier: he had a civilian profession and a family, and he chose to defend his country when nobody required him to. Within a few years he became an officer trusted with defending a vital site outside Kyiv. In the first weeks of the full-scale war, people like him held the capital. His path shows that it is never too late to start defending your country once you decide it is your job.
