A champion from Kremenchuk

Maksym Kahal was born in 1991 in Kremenchuk and grew up living for sport: he played for the local rugby team Bastion, boxed and ran. In 2014, competing for Ukraine, he became world kickboxing champion in the ISKA version and took a bronze at the same championships. That same year he graduated from the Mykhailo Ostrohradskyi University in Kremenchuk.

From the ring to Azov

The next year, 2015, Maksym joined Azov and went to defend eastern Ukraine under the call sign Piston. To spare his mother worry, he told her he was going to the capital to work in private security. But on duty he often couldn’t be reached, and his anxious mother, Tetiana, turned to his mobile operator, where she learned a striking detail: his phone had last been picked up at Chonhar, near Crimea. Soon her son got in touch and promised to explain everything in person, and she had to accept his decision. From then on Azov became the meaning of Maksym’s life, and he was especially proud to be one of its fighters.

Mariupol, 2022

When the full-scale invasion began, Senior Lieutenant Kahal commanded a platoon in Azov, led by Denys Prokopenko. During the defence of Mariupol he and his soldiers destroyed several pieces of russian military equipment.

Maksym Kahal was killed in a russian airstrike in Mariupol on 25 March 2022. He was 30. On 2 April 2022 he was made a Hero of Ukraine posthumously, by the same decree as his fellow Azov officer Vitalii Hrytsaienko.

Why it matters today

Maksym Kahal represented Ukraine in the world’s rings, and then stood up to defend it. His story shows that the strength and stamina sport gives you are needed not only for medals but for protecting your own people. For anyone training today, he shows how a champion becomes a defender. In his home city of Kremenchuk a street now bears his name.
